Unfair Breed Judging

You know? I really get upset with people that judge an individual animal by breed or what they have heard about the breed.

Usually it goes like this "Oh, I hate (fill in the breed) because one time I had one knock me down." or "I heard that (fill in the breed) bites/bucks/jumps/requires electric shock training (fill in other stupid ideas here)." or "That breed has bad hips (or eyes or skin or name another problem any dog can have)". So a whole breed of animals are judged on one animal that was having a bad day or that is not trained well.

We had a neighbor who use to ride bucking horses, he worked for a Rancher and of course has always ridden "ranch horses" ie, either Quarter Horses or high percentage Quarter Horses. He rode ONE, hear me, ONE Gaited Horse. This ONE Gaited Horse, breed unknown to me, he just called the ONE horse a Gaited Horse. (I never saw the horse, this happened before we moved here) Anyway, the ONE Gaited Horse he ever rode stumbled, so now he says "Gaited Horses stumble." He goes on and on about how Gaited Horses are not "all that". That really BUGS ME!! Did you know that Gaited Horses need Gaited Horse Saddles for proper shoulder movement? The rider of the ONE gaited horse also thinks every horse can wear the same saddle. It fits him, that is all that matters.

On the other hand, you have a whole group of people that will run out and buy a (fill in the breed) dog or horse because they saw an animal of that breed on TV or in a Movie that was well behaved, smart, cute and it did tricks.

I once had a lady tell me "You are so lucky. You always get smart dogs. Every dog I have ever owned is just dumb." I tried to be polite when I told her it could be the trainer not the trainee. Yes. I really did tell her that. I was not saying to her that I am a great trainer, but that she could learn more on how to train her own animals better by doing the homework and reading up on training.

My point here is DO THE HOMEWORK!! Read up on breeds of animals before buying one. Talk to people that own the breed of animal or in fact species of animals you are thinking of buying.

BY ALL MEANS!! DO NOT JUDGE THE BREED BY ONE ANIMAL. BAD OR GOOD, IT IS ONE ANIMAL. MAYBE IT DOES REPRESENT THE BREED WELL, BUT MAYBE, JUST MAYBE, IT DOES NOT!!
